How Can Temperature Be Measured Fairly?

Temperature is how hot or cold something is — and it's a measurable

Learning Objective

Students will learn that hands are unreliable temperature judges — the same lukewarm water feels hot to a cold hand and cold to a warm hand — so we measure temperature fairly with a **thermometer**, the same tool giving the same answer every time. (TEKS 3.6A — measure/test/record properties of matter including temperature; NGSS 3-5-ETS1-3 — fair tests with controlled variables.)

What You'll Learn

  • Your hands don't measure temperature — they feel heat FLOWING in or out, so
  • The classic trick: one hand in warm water, one in cold — then both into
  • A thermometer measures the actual temperature — the liquid inside rises
  • A fair measurement uses the same tool, the same way, with a wait for the

Words to Know

Temperature
How hot or cold something is.
The thermometer showed the water's temperature.
Thermometer
The tool that measures temperature — the liquid inside rises when it's warm.
The red line climbed to 75 degrees.
Fair test
Measuring the same way every time so you can trust the answer.
We used the same thermometer in both bowls.
Heat flow
Heat moving from warm things into cool things.
Kitty's warm paw sent heat into the cool water.
Measure
To find the size or amount of something with a tool.
We measured the water twice and got the same number.

What does temperature measure?

Fun Facts

  • Temperature is a measurable property of matter — how hot or cold something is

Source: TEKS 3.6A — measure/test/record matter properties including temperature

  • Human hands do not measure temperature — they sense heat flowing in or out of the skin, so the same lukewarm water feels cool to a warm hand and warm to a cold hand

Source: classic three-bowl physiology demonstration; standard heat-transfer explanation

  • A thermometer gives the same reading every time under the same conditions — the liquid inside expands (rises) when warm and contracts (falls) when cold

    Source: standard thermometer mechanism

  • A fair measurement uses the same tool, the same procedure, and a wait for the reading to settle — controlled variables

    Source: NGSS 3-5-ETS1-3 fair tests

  • A metal doorknob and a wooden door in the same room are the same temperature — metal feels colder because it conducts heat away from skin faster

    Source: standard thermal-conductivity explanation
